EcoGuide, the official publication of EcoWatch, is part of an on-going public awareness project of NBC6/WTVJ Miami, along with our newspaper partners at The Herald, focusing on key environmental issues facing South Florida. It’s an unprecedented project among news media in the United States.
Since the kick off on Earth Day, 2001, NBC 6 News has broadcast more than 100 EcoWatch reports. Some examples are as follows:
• Everglades restoration
• Protecting coral reefs; traveling to Bali, Indonesia
• An exclusive investigation into Navy sonar that killed whales near South Florida waters
• Exclusive reports on overfishing the world’s oceans
• Asking whether Florida should enact a bottle deposit to reduce litter
• The elusive Florida Panther
• The battle over Swamp Buggies in sensitive Everglades land
• An exclusive investigation into controversial mosquito pesticides that resulted in the death of endangered shorebirds
• Invasive species of strange fish, animals and plants causing enormous economic impact
• An investigation into illegal shark finning
But EcoWatch goes beyond reports within our newscasts and articles in our newspapers. We want to reach out and engage the community in valuable discussion over these issues.
