1980s

1981

Increased frequency of vacation travel validates tourism as an essential element in quality of life. EDSA’s design of the first inland, 5-star hotel destination, the Grand Cypress Resort in Florida, sets a new standard in free-form swimming pool design and establishes 45 acres of natural terrain as an Audubon Walk within the resort.

1983

YUPPIES (Young Urban Professional) and DINKIES (Dual Income, No Kids Yet) are on the rise. EDSA’s design of the Bal Harbour Shops responds to this targeted market with an open air, city center offering “shopping as a lifestyle” with a mix of high-end retailers, restaurants and entertainment venues.

1984

A branch office in Orlando thrives with assignments from the Disney Corporation and Orlando International Airport. EDSA’s site design establishes OIA as a tourism gateway that presents a welcoming natural landscape paradise replete with lagoons and gardens. Today, OIA is considered one of the most attractive, efficient and busiest passenger airports in the country with nearly 35 million visitors a year.

1986

Haig Point, on Daufuskie Island, South Carolina illustrates EDSA’s approach towards ecosystem preservation. More than twenty years later, Haig Point is recognized as an example of sound wetland management and environmental planning.

1988

EDSA wins major hometown commissions with the Fort Lauderdale Beach and Riverwalk. These projects help bring landscape architects to the forefront as team leaders in urban revitalization, while showcasing underused waterfronts as an important quality of life amenity in cities. These revitalizations stimulated over $1 billion worth of private sector development in a 15 year period.
