Howard Hughes Medical Institute
Founded by Howard R. Hughes, the Institute headquarters are now located on the northwest border of Washington D.C., on a densely wooded site. This campus provides office space, research facilities, lodging for visiting researchers and scientists, and facilities for the many conferences held at the headquarters each year. The Institute made the decision to expand and purchased the adjacent land. The new property includes a historic residence and boxwood garden which will be restored to their original intent.
EDSA developed construction drawings and worked closely with the client to integrate the new landscape as seamlessly as possible into the existing one. Care was given to preserve many of the magnificent trees on the site by careful grading and selectively located stone walls. EDSA also designed several interior courtyard spaces and the West Plaza which has a terraced fountain surrounding it. EDSA worked with LEED Accredited Professionals to ensure the design met the required criteria for LEED Gold certification.
