Overview

West Lake Park is an environmental park which features mangrove forests, shallow lakes, and 3 miles of frontage on the Intracoastal Waterway. Other amenities include the Anne Kolb Nature Center, a saltwater aquarium, an “EcoRoom,” and several species of rare and endangered birds and fish. The main theme of the entire project is to preserve and feature the environment.

West Lake Park heralded a new environmental direction in Regional Park planning by incorporating extremely low impact development, utilizing sustainable/recycled materials, preserving endangered lands for future generations, and employing construction means and methods consistent with LEED practices well before its time. The project represents the single most important environmental effort ever made in Broward County. The ten year effort resulted in the creation of the largest urban park in Florida.

EDSA served as prime consultant for planning and design and was responsible for the master plan, site design, landscape architecture, environmental permitting, and assistance in grant applications. EDSA also designed the nature, canoe, and bicycle trails.
